Lately, I have grown to be fascinated with patterns. This occurred after my lessons at The Art Institute of Chicago.”
Love has shown her paintings in local as well as international juried exhibits. Some of her pieces can be seen in The McNeese Permanent Collection from the National Works on Paper Exhibit and at Bayou Treasures in Welsh. Other recent shows include The Southern Open and Gallery 359 in Lafayette, and The Zigler Museum in a Jeff Davis Parish. Her works have also been included in The Masur Museum’s juried competition along with The Louisiana Competition.

I have chosen to exhibit works from before I started painting at McNeese University, where I got my undergraduate degree, to when I graduated with a master of art at Northwestern and beyond. Those ’25 Years of Love’ have been a wonderful trip.”

Southwest Louisiana residents to take steps to improve health in Start! Heart Walk
Southwest Louisiana residents are taking steps to improve their heart health by participating in the Southwest Louisiana Heart Walk Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Lake Charles Civic Center.
The annual event, which raises funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers, begins at 8:30 a.m. registration and 9 a.m. kickoff.

The non-competitive, three-mile walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages.

“Brisk walking for as little as 30 minutes a day has proven health benefits, such as providing increased energy and circulation, as well as reduced risk of heart disease,” said Cassondra Guilbeau, senior regional director of the American Heart Association of Southwest Louisiana. “The Start! Heart Walk is designed to help participants understand this critical message, join with others, and generate a renewed commitment to heart-healthy living through walking.”
Among the activities planned for this year’s event are live music and dancing, a kid’s area, games and prizes, a block party on Shell Beach Drive, a heart healthy jambalaya cook-off and a t shirt contest.

Each day, nearly 2,400 Americans die from a cardiovascular disease. That’s an average of one death every 37 seconds. A leading risk factor for heart attack and stroke is lack of physical activity. Research has also found that individuals may gain two hours of life expectancy for every one hour of regular, vigorous exercise they do.

Start! Heart Walk is nationally sponsored by Subway Restaurants®, Healthy Choice® and Astra Zeneca.

2 P.M. matinee Sunday, October 4.

Moliere’s “The Imaginary Invalid,” translated and adapted by Adley Cormier as “Le Malade Imaginare en Louisiane,” is set in Calcasieu Parish, 1939, and strongly flavored with the sounds of Southwest Louisiana. Veteran theatre artist Adley Cormier is guest director. John Abegglen is scenic and lighting designer.

Worldwide Maize Craze
With no UFO sightings reported in Louisiana this year, the mystery remains as to how an extraterrestrial-like design has taken shape in a Reeves field. Bringing the maze craze to this small town, the Melsheimer family will unravel the mystery when they open the area’s first MAiZE, an intricate network of twists and turns carved into 5 acres of sorghum, on September 26, 2009.
The Melsheimer’s and maze designer Brett Herbst – the world’s leading designer of 1,500+ corn mazes worldwide -- hope to challenge the wits of those seeking to find the one exit from their mind-boggling puzzle -- a unique source of good farmin' fun for adults and children alike. Though the correct pathway can be walked in only 15 minutes, most wandering maze-goers will require about one hour to travel through more than three miles of twists, turns and decision points. As a tribute to its location, the maze is designed in the shape of Louisiana with an array of farm animal mixed in.
The MAiZE will give Louisiana residents the chance to "get lost" September 26th through November 29th. Hours of operation are Friday- 5:00-9:00, Saturday- 10:00-9:00 and Sunday 1:00-6:00. Field trip hours, during weekdays, are available by reservation. The location is HWY 190 in Reeves, right next to Reeves City Park. Cost is $10:00 for ages 12 and up, $8:00 for ages 4-11, and free for kids 3 and under. Discounts are offered for families, groups and field trips. For more information or to make reservations, call 337-666-2280 or visit www.cmfarmsllc.com.

The New Reality: The Frontier of Realism in the 21st Century August 14 - October 17

Opening Reception: August 14th 6:00pm - 9:00pm
1911 Historic City Hall Arts and Cultural Center
Lecture with Realist painter Albino Hinojosa: August 28 6:30pm - 8:00pm
The New Reality: The Frontier of Realism in the 21st Century is the first show of this century to not only look at the state of Realism painting around the world, but to also compare those artworks with their historical predecessors. Fifty-six artists from the International Guild of Realism display artworks in a variety of media; from oil and acrylic, to egg tempura and colored pencil. Each artist was asked to identify one historical painting to compare and contrast their work with the pioneers of the Realist movement. Artists sited included Ingres, Durer, Vermeer, and Da Vinci. In some cases the contrast between the old and the new is startling; in other cases, one can almost see the contemporary artist adapting the Old Master's techniques for modern visuals. The New Reality: The Frontier of Realism in the 21st Century will open with a reception on August 14th from 6pm to 9pm and run through October 17, 2009. Special Events include an Artist Lecture featuring Realist painter Albino Hinojosa on August 28th at 6:30pm. Hinojosa is a member of the International Guild of Realism and a participant in this exhibit, as well as a former faculty member at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston.
